The Periodic Table of Kink

quote [Brilliant! Hilarious! Unless you’re in the UK… I’m so sorry, UK. Certain people in your government appear to defy Darwinism. Still, UberKinky’s [UK] Government Approved Periodic Table of Kink (large image) is really fun.
(via Violet Blue)

UberKinky explains it best:

On Tuesday 1 December, the Audiovisual Media Services Regulations 2014 introduced a series of restrictions on the pornography produced and sold in the UK. Now video on demand must adhere to the same strict criteria as DVDs, movies and TV shows. As a result, a number of sexual acts have been deemed too ‘harmful’ or ‘dangerous’ for us to watch, and have thus been banned from our screens altogether (if produced/provided in the UK). The UK is now subject to some of the most severe content restrictions in Europe.

(…) Now, with the new pornographic laws in place, we decided to update our UberKinky Periodic Table of Kink to reflect this. So Check out our all new Government Approved Periodic Table of Kink today and find out which of your favourite fetishes have been outlawed!

Remember; it’s better to educate than regulate…

“Pornography is the canary in the coalmine of free speech: it is the first freedom to die. If this assault on liberty is allowed to go unchallenged, other freedoms will fall as a consequence.” - Myles Jackman, legal adviser for Backlash.

Lonely Sculpture by Tully Arnot

Lonely Sculpture by Tully Arnot is a concise comment on the current condition of "social" networks.
quote [Lonely Sculpture is a piece of technology that reflects the way we interact. Dating apps like Tinder are an aspect of socialization that allows for isolation: it reduces identity and demands judgement. The work heightens an absence or disconnect that already exists with this form of interaction. However, Lonely Sculpture does not reserve judgement. The artist’s mechanized silicone index finger taps yes to every dating profile that appears on the screen, even when the screen is loading new profiles the finger keeps unconsciously tapping, anticipating, longing].

Webdriver Torso: YouTube mystery

quote [On 23 September 2013 at 14:45, YouTube user Webdriver Torso quietly uploaded a video.
The mysterious 11-second sequence of red and blue rectangles could easily have been lost, unexplained and unappreciated among YouTube's plethora of kittens and music videos. But 28 minutes later Webdriver uploaded an almost identical video, and another an hour after that, and another, until eight months later - apparently happy with nearly 80,000 clips - they fell silent, with 236 hours of video to their name.
Almost all of the uploads follow the same pattern - 10 slides, each with a red rectangle, a blue rectangle and a computer-generated tone.
The shapes change size and the notes change pitch. Each video appears to be unique, but the format stays the same].

Spy messages?

Wired magazine first stumbled on the clips in February as part of a feature on obscure YouTube uploads.

A Google search for “Webdriver Torso” only turns up results related to the YouTube channel. (We reached out to Webdriver Torso via the YouTube messenger, but have not heard back.)

A search for “Webdriver” alone, however, is somewhat more fruitful.

On the blog BoingBoing, user Enkidu speculated that the videos might be a digital version of spies' "numbers stations". These cold war relics are radio stations that broadcast seemingly random numbers at periodic intervals.

The very first video uploaded to the channel, over a month before the first rectangle classic, reveals a completely different side to Webdriver.
Locked behind a 1.99 euro ($2.76; £1.63) paywall and only accessible if you're in France, is a clip from the cartoon series Aqua Teen Hunger Force, in which the show's three anthropomorphic fast-food items - Frylock, Meatwad and Master Shake - fail to win a pub quiz.

The second anomalous clip only raises more questions.
In video 1,182 we have what could be our first sighting of Webdriver.
Filmed from a Parisian balcony, the six-second clip shows an Eiffel Tower lightshow followed by a fleeting glimpse of a face.

Below the video, Webdriver has left a comment, their only known communication with the world: "Matei is highly intelligent."

quote [Selenium is a set of tools that help you automate Web-based tasks. According to its site, “it is for automating Web applications for testing purposes, but it is certainly not limited to just that.” One of the tools Selenium offers is something called WebDriver.
“WebDriver is a tool for writing automated tests of websites,” reads the WebDriver FAQ. “It aims to mimic the behavior of a real user, and as such interacts with the HTML of the application.” So we reached out to the owners of Selenium WebDriver identified in this list of developers. It looked likely that “Webdriver torso” was part of this project, not only because of the shared neologism but also because automation seemed like the only plausible explanation for uploading this quantity of video.
But Patrick Lightbody, who has been involved with Selenium since 2005, denied that there was any connection between their WebDriver and Webdriver Torso. “Those videos look like they are trying to make contact with aliens,” he wrote].

CamGirls Project by Vanessa Omoregie

CamGirls Project by Vanessa Omoregie is an investigative project that explored the female image within the online space.
The project throughout its course looked at themes of questioning “beauty” standards, ideas of censorship, and representation in art. It was an interactive piece starting with the instruction “copy this pose”, allowing people across the internet to re-create women portrayed in famous paintings.

quote [The project asked questions about why the internet in regards to art isn’t taken as seriously and why important cultural phenomena like selfies are kind of mocked by the media, especially when they involves women. I wanted to look at who the “online girl” is and how her image is perceived through the lens of cyber-space].

Selfiecity

Selfiecity investigates selfies using a mix of theoretic, artistic and quantitative methods:

• We present our findings about the demographics of people taking selfies, their poses and expressions.
• Rich media visualizations (imageplots) assemble thousands of photos to reveal interesting patterns.
• The interactive selfiexploratory allows you to navigate the whole set of 3200 photos.
• Finally, theoretical essays discuss selfies in the history of photography, the functions of images in social media, and methods and dataset.

Interactive Chart of Biblical Contradictions

quote [A few years ago, computer science whiz Chris Harrison created a beautiful visualization linking up every cross reference in the Bible. So, for example, if a verse in the New Testament referred back to a verse in the Old Testament, there was an arc drawn between the two chapters they were in (the vertical lines at the bottom represent the number of verses in that chapter). Turns out there are 63,779 cross references in the Bible (and that many arcs in the image)! If it’s any indication of how complex this image is, the high-resolution version is more than 100MB large.

In 2009, graphic designer Andy Marlow used Harrison’s work as his inspiration to created a similar visual for Sam Harris‘ Reason Project. This time, though, he only included arcs representing contradictions in the Bible.

Now, computer programmer Daniel G. Taylor has taken all that data and turned it into a visual masterpiece.
His website, BibViz (Bible Visualization), gives you the same linking arcs as before, but when you hover over one of them, it lights up and tells you in the upper right-hand corner of the screen which verses are being linked together. Click on an arc and it takes you directly to those verses as compiled in the Skeptics Annotated Bible]

Alva Bernadine - Inappropriate Images 2

Alva Bernadine, a "must" here at Unscathed Corpse, with his second part in his Inappropriate Images series (..at the bottom for pictures...).
quote [This is the second instalment in my project. The first can be seen here. I thought of what the streets might look like if inappropriate content could be seen in an urban enviroment and at the same time treat it as an ad campaign. My first trip to take background images was to the West End of London. I had not been there for some years and discovered that some buildings had huge posters on their sides and others being renovated had posters and hoardings sometimes up to the height of two floors. I visited several parts of London and photographed billboards and posters and composited erotic and surreal pornographic images into them. After that it occurred to me to concentrate on London museums and art galleries photographing and videoing their frontages and interiors, such as the Tate Modern, Hayward, Whitechapel and private commercial galleries such as Saatchi, Gagosian, Lisson etc.].

The mistery of Numbers station

A numbers station is a type of shortwave radio station characterized by unusual broadcasts, often created by artificially generated voices reciting streams of numbers, words, letters, tunes or Morse code. They are transmitted in a wide variety of languages and the voices are usually female, although sometimes men's or children's voices are used.... more and more.

The Conet Project - Recordings of Shortwave Numbers Stations.

And also... How to Listen to Real Spy Broadcasts Right Now.

According to the notes of The Conet Project, which has compiled recordings of these transmissions, numbers stations have been reported since World War I. If accurate, this would count numbers stations among the earliest radio broadcasts. It has long been speculated, and was argued in court in one case, that these stations operate as a simple and foolproof method for government agencies to communicate with spies working undercover. According to this theory, the messages are encrypted with a one-time pad, to avoid any risk of decryption by the enemy. As evidence, numbers stations have changed details of their broadcasts or produced special, nonscheduled broadcasts coincident with extraordinary political events, such as the August Coup of 1991 in the Soviet Union.
